Ballots will be opened on December 25 for the election of 18 municipality leaders in TRNC.
It will be the first election after the number of municipalities was reduced from 28 to 18. Representatives for the municipality councils and mukhtars will also be elected.
Yesterday was the day for the candidates to submit their applications to the Election Board. All the current mayors of the 6 district municipalities including the capital Nicosia will be running for a new term in the office. The election board is expected to announce the candidates today.
The new legislation reducing the number of municipalities saw the amalgamation of some village-town municipalities.
