The historic Taksim stadium in the Buffer Zone will be revived by the Directorate General of Investment and Management of the Turkish Sports Ministry.
Taksim Stadium, which has not been in use for quite a long time, will be a 52x98 m synthetic surfaced sports arena surrounded by a wire fence and will have a FIFA Quality Document. The renewal work is aimed at being finished in one month.
According to the statement of KEİ Office of the Turkish Embassy in Nicosia, the infrastructure development work of the sports complexes of TRNC is carried out within the context of the " Cooperation Protocol in the Field of Youth and Sports" and the "2022 Financial and Monerary Cooperation Agreement" signed by TRNC and Turkey.
The Taksim Stadium will be transformed into a new sporting venue for young Turkish Cypriots.
The Taksim Stadium, which was built during Ottoman era, between the bastions of "Zahra" and "Yiğitler", was used by Çetinkaya Turkish Sports Club as a football ground in the year 1930.
It also hosted the national day celebrations of Turkish Cypriots.
After Çetinkaya and all other Turkish Sports Club was excluded from the sports competitions by the Greek Cypriots, the area began to be referred to as "Taksim," which means division.
