The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on the United Nations Secretary-General’s report of the ‘Activities of the UN Peacekeeping Force and the Good Offices Mission’ on the island. "It is obvious that the United Nations is distant from the current realities on the island," the statement said.
The full statement is as follows:
“The Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) presented to the United Nations Peacekeeping Force (UNFICYP ) which aims to set a legal basis of its operations in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is referred to as a draft framework document. In this regard, the ministry will continue the necessary efforts to establish a reconciliation model that will register the existence of our country and satisfy our justified demands...
It is obvious that the United Nations (UN) which is unable to openly report the outdated restrictions imposed on the Turkish Cypriot people, who are the equal partners of the island, is far from the existing realities of the island. Referring to misleading formulas such as island-wide trade as a remedy to the restrictions imposed on the Turkish Cypriot people, the statement said that this only serves the Greek Cypriot side’s policies of preventing the Turkish Cypriot people from carrying out direct trade with the world.
The ministry has also noted that the reactions of the TRNC regarding the military agreements between the Greek Cypriot side and the United States, and also the negative statements that were not removed from textbooks used in the schools of the Greek Cypriot side, were not mentioned in the UN report.
The "Cyprus Government", which has developed an absolute Greek Cypriot administration on the island and has lost its legitimacy, and the statements that one-third of the UN Peacekeeping Force’s budget covers this administration, are not only contrary to the principle of objectivity of the United Nations but once again proves that the UN has become a part of the problem on the island.
In addition, the expressions used in the ‘Reports’ that describe one side of the island as a ‘state’ and the other side as a ‘community’ is completely unacceptable. It is obvious that the equal status allegedly attributed to the Turkish Cypriot side at the negotiating table is nothing but a perception game. Unless the equal status of the two sides on the island is internationally acknowledged and the sovereign equality and equal international status of the vested rights of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus are accepted, it will not be possible to reach an agreement between the two sides.
Noting that the Secretary-General had recorded that there is no common ground between the two sides on the island, the time has come for the UN Security Council to review its resolutions, which are inconsistent with the current realities on the island” the statement concluded.
